Christmas and New Year Holidays -
The Practice will be closed only on 25 and 26 December 2018 and 1 and 2 January 2019. We will be open as normal on other weekdays over the festive period. Most of our appointments over that period will be bookable on the day.
If you are ordering prescriptions please allow the Practice two full working days to process a routine request and three for a special request. This does not include the day that you submitted or handed in the request. If your prescription goes direct to a Pharmacy please allow them time to process the prescription as well. Please do not phone or enquire about ' emergency requests' unless you have been told to do so and please don't phone early just to find out if your prescription is processed.
General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR)
GDPR is a new law that determines how your personal data is processed, kept safe and the legal rights that you have in relation to your own data. The regulation applies from 25 May 2018. GDPR will supersede the Data Protection Act 1998 which the practice already complies with but strengthens many of it’s principles.
WHAT GDPR WILL MEAN FOR PATIENTS/STAFF
- must be processed lawfully, fairly and transparently.
- collected for specific, explicit and legitimate purposes.
- must be limited to what is necessary for the purposes for which it is processed.
- must be accurate and kept up to date.
- must be held securely.
- It can only be retained for as long as is necessary for the reasons it was collected.
- Being informed about how their data is used.
- To have access to their own data.
- To ask to have incorrect information changed.
- To restrict how their data is used.
- Move their patients/staff data from one organisation to another.
- To object to their personal information being processed (in certain circumstances).
THE MAIN CHANGES ARE:
- The Practice must comply with Subject Access Requests - a written signed request from an individual to see what information is held about them - like where we require your consent to process data. This must be freely given, specific, informed and unambiguous.
- New special protection for personal data.
- The Information Commissioner’s Office must be notified within 72 hours of a data breach.
- Higher fines for data breaches.

Quarryfoot Practice List
Currently two practices in Bonnyrigg Health Centre are operating on a ‘restricted but open’ basis. This means that for the time being we will only register certain categories of patients, as follows:
New babies of existing patients
Immediate family members of existing patients who become resident within the registered patient’s address Temporary residents
Assignments / allocations
Strathesk Practice currently has an open list.
If you are assigned to Quarryfoot Practice,please bring the letter from the Health Board with you when you attend your allocated practice for the registration forms.

Bowel Screening Programme
Bowel cancer is the third most common cancer in Scotland after lung and breast cancer. The Scottish Bowel Screening Programme invites all men and women between the ages of 50-74 for screening every two years.
In 2012, 57.4% of the practice patients who were eligible to be offered the test took up the invitation but we would like to encourage all of those who receive a letter from the screening programme to take the test if they have not already done so.
Screening aims to find bowel cancer at an early stage in people with no symptoms. If bowel cancer is detected early through screening there is a 90% chance of treating the disease successfully. We strongly urge all eligible patients to take the test.
If the screening test is negative it does not mean you definitely do not have cancer. Please see your GP if you have any abnormal symptoms such as bleeding from your bottom or with your stools, recent persistent change in bowel habit, abdominal pain, weight loss or pallor.

New Scottish Website for Diabetic patients.
NHS Scotland has launched a website called ' My Diabetes My Way' to allow patients to manage their diabetes, including the ability to access their own test results if they wish. To find the link click on the 'Long-term' conditions tab under 'Further information' (right) and then click on the Diabetes heading.

To use our text reminder service for patient appointments we need to know current mobile numbers. If you would like to have a text reminder for a routine or review appointment please give us a note of your current mobile number and if we have it already, remember to let us know if you change it.

Facebook friend requests
Professional bodies governing the conduct of clinical staff recommend that our clinicians do not accept friend requests as it can interfere with the practice /patient relationship. Please do not send a request to the GP's or nurses. If you do it may be declined. This is for both your safety and that of the staff to ensure that a professional relationship is maintained at all times.
